HAVING BONFIRES

Most allotment sites allow you to have a bonfire on your plot.

If you have a bonfire there are strict rules you must follow:

  • you can only have bonfires in November

  • bonfires can only be used to burn diseased plant material

  • your bonfire must not cause a nuisance to other people

  • you must never leave a bonfire unattended

WAITING LIST

We now have our own Whats app Group if you want to join it just contact me  John 07955510237

The Committee reminds everyone that if you bring a dog on to the site it MUST be on  a lead at all times.

From Confederation to Cooperative

Birmingham & District Allotment Confederation needs to adapt if it is to meet the needs of the associations and their members in both the current political and economic crisis.

Central to this is the move to become a Cooperative; working closely with the National Allotment Society and its law team a new constitution, terms of reference etc.. are being drafted ready for the next AGM so please ensure your association is represented as it. This will be the biggest change in the history of BDAC. Linked to this may be the opportunity for larger sites to take on greater management responsibilities or for sites to give up their committees and be centrally run. Changes that will affect all sites and all tenants.

Further details, including agenda and motions will be sent directly to  association secretaries

ALLOTMENT OF THE MONTH

The Birmingham Allotment Project is an exciting new project by General Public exploring the heritage of allotments in Birmingham from the 1960s to the present day.

Working closely with Birmingham and District Allotment Confederation, allotment associations and plot-holders city-wide, the project will present an alternative social history of Birmingham via its allotment culture. Birmingham has 113 allotment sites, more than any other local authority, and this project aims to inspire, engage and encourage people to learn about allotments, their history and their place in the city today. The project includes:
A major exhibition at the Library of Birmingham from October to December 2023.

  • Working closely with six local schools to train young people in making oral histories.

  • Volunteering opportunities: training in how to make oral histories and the chance to help shape the project.

  • Recording memories and stories: 45 oral histories with plot holders and members of allotment associations.

  • Creation of a website, publication and Birmingham allotment archive.

  • An education pack.

  • A touring exhibition visiting allotment sites.
